When you bring home a pet, no matter what kind it is, you have to give it a name to make it part of your family. You do have to spend time thinking about suitable names that match the pet itself and its personality. You also have to remember that you will be using this name numerous times during the day so it has to be one that is easy to say and that you like. It also has to be a name that your pet will come to recognize quite easily. You don't want to use a name that you would feel embarrasses about using in public. When you have a pet that you train with command words, you have to careful not to choose a name that may rhyme with one of these words. Dogs, especially, have difficulty distinguishing between words that have similar sounds. Long names are also harder to remember and say than shorter ones. If you have an Oriental pet, you might want to look at Oriental type names. The same thing applies to pets from German, French, Scottish or Alaskan descent or from any part of the world. Choosing a name is something that you need to put some thought and research into so you choose a name that really does suit your pet. When you first bring home your pet, take some time to get used to having it in the house so that you can observe its behaviour. Quite often pets will choose their own names by engaging in activities that all the time that lend themselves to naming the pet. A puppy that chews on everything in sight for example, can be named Chewy. Another factor that you have to take into consideration is that if you have a baby animal this pet will grow to an adult and in some cases could become quite large. While a cute baby name is nice for it when it is young, it may not suit the pet when it is grown. Choose a name that will suit it at any age. There is nothing wrong with using male and female names for your pet. However, you do have to exercise caution here too. You wouldn't want to insult a friend by giving his/her name to your pet because it could give the impression that you are comparing this person to an animal. While you may think that naming a pet is a very simple chore, it is one to which you have to give considerable consideration.
